Fruits mentioned in the Quran and their health benefits ( Part 1)

The Quran is not only a spiritual guide but also a source of knowledge on the various fruits that we can consume for good health. Let’s take a closer look at some fruits mentioned in the Quran and their benefits.

 

  • Olives

Olives are mentioned several times in the Quran and are a staple food in many parts of the world. Here are some of the health benefits of olives:

  • Contains monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, which is linked to preventing heart disease.
  • Rich in antioxidants that protect against diseases like cancer.
  • Helps reduce inflammation throughout the body.
  • Excellent source of vitamin E, which protects our skin.
  • Rich in iron and copper, making them a great protection against anemia

Allah says:

“With it He grows for you grain, olives, palms, vines, and all kinds of other crops. There truly is a sign in this for those who reflect.” [an-Nahl: 11]

﴿وَيُنبِتُ لَكُم بِهِ الزَّرْعَ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالنَّخِيلَ وَالْأَعْنَابَ وَمِن كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ﴾. [سورة النحل: 11].

  • Grapes

Grapes are a popular fruit that is mentioned in the Quran. Here are some of the health benefits of grapes:

  • Contains antioxidants that protect against cancer and other diseases
  • Helps reduce inflammation throughout the body
  • Rich in vitamins C and K, as well as potassium
  • Contains natural sugars that provide energy
  • Helps maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels

“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed there are signs for people who believe.” [Quran 6:99]

In the Quran, grapes are mentioned as a symbol of the grace of paradise. Allah says:

“From the fruits of date palms and grapes you take sweet juicee and wholesome provisions. There truly is a sign in this for people who use their reason.” [An-Nahl: 67]

.[وَمِن ثَمَرَاتِ النَّخِيلِ وَالْأَعْنَابِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنْهُ سَكَرًا وَرِزْقًا حَسَنًا ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ﴾. [سورة النحل: 67﴿

  • Dates

Dates are one of the most commonly mentioned fruits in the Quran and are a part of the sunnah of the prophet Muhammed peace be upon him. Allah says:

When Allah mentioned the story of Mary in the Quran especially when she gave birth to Jesus, peace be upon him, he mentioned that he commanded her to eat dates. Allah says:

“and, if you shake the trunk of the palm tree towards you, it will deliver fresh ripe dates for you.” [Mary: 25].

﴿وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا﴾. [سورة مريم: 25].

 

Here are some of the health benefits of dates:

  • Contains natural sugars that provide energy
  • Helps regulate a healthy nervous system
  • Rich in iron, making them useful in treating anemia
  • Helps improve eyesight and cure night blindness
  • Contains fiber, which aids in digestion and promotes bowel movements

Bananas are also considered a fruit of paradise and offer several health benefits. Here are some of the benefits of bananas:

  • Contains dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and promotes bowel movements
  • Rich in potassium, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure and heart function
  • Contains polyphenolic antioxidant compounds that positively impact kidney function and toxin accumulation
  • Helps regulate a healthy nervous system
  • Contains vitamin C and B6, which are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system

Allah says:

“And [banana] trees layered [with fruit]”. [al-Waaqia: 25].

﴿وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ﴾. [سورة الواقعة: 29].

  •   Pomegranates:

Pomegranates are often considered a delicacy and are enjoyed both fresh and dried. This fruit is mentioned in the Quran as one of the fruits of Paradise, and it also offers several health benefits. Here are some of the benefits of pomegranates:

  • Antioxidant-rich: Pomegranates contain high levels of antioxidants called flavonoids, which are effective in counteracting various cancer radials.
  • Oral health: Pomegranates help reduce the effects of dental plaque and protect against various oral diseases.
  • Digestive aid: Pomegranates help calm disorders of the stomach and diarrhea caused by digestive problems.
  • Good for bowel movements: Pomegranates contain fiber, which promotes healthy bowel movements.
  • Nutrient-rich: Pomegranates are rich in vitamin C and potassium, and they also contain small amounts of other essential nutrients like calcium and iron.

Allah orders people in his holy Quran to search for the benefit of multiple fruits. One of them is the pomegranates. Allah says:

“With fruits– date palms and pomegranate trees.” [al-Rahmaan: 68].

﴿فِيهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَنَخْلٌ وَرُمَّانٌ﴾. [سورة الواقعة: 28-29]
