Pomegranate in the Quran: Exploring the Health Benefits of a Divine Fruit

Pomegranate is a delicious and nutritious fruit that has been enjoyed for centuries. It is also one of the fruits mentioned in the Quran, the holy book of Islam. In this article, we will explore the many health benefits of pomegranate and what the Quran has to say about it.

Pomegranate in the Quran

Pomegranate is not specifically mentioned in the Quran, but it is included in the list of fruits that Allah has made grow for human consumption in Surah al-An’am, Verse 99. 

Surah al-An’am, Verse 99:

“هُوَ الَّذِي يُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَتَجْرِي بِهِ أَنْهَارٌ فِي قُدْسِهَا مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ وَالنَّبَاتِ ۖ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ”

Translation: “He is the one who sends down water from the sky, and with it we bring forth plants of all kinds, and from them we bring forth green crops, and grains we pile on top of each other – the plants varying from the mountains to the plains, white, red, diverse hues among the plants and the grains. Surely, in that there is a sign for those who understand.”

This verse mentions a variety of fruits and plants that Allah has created, including pomegranates, as a sign of His generosity and a reminder to reflect on His signs.

  2. Add them to salads: Pomegranate seeds can add a sweet and tangy flavor to salads. Try adding them to a mixed greens salad with goat cheese and walnuts.
  3. Use them in cooking: Pomegranate seeds can be used in a variety of cooked dishes, such as stews, tagines, and couscous.
  4. Make pomegranate juice: Fresh pomegranate juice is a delicious and nutritious beverage that can be enjoyed on its own or used as a mixer in cocktails.
  5. Make a pomegranate smoothie: Blend pomegranate seeds with yogurt, milk, and honey for a delicious and nutritious smoothie.
  6. Sprinkle them on yogurt: Pomegranate seeds can be sprinkled on top of yogurt for a healthy and flavorful breakfast or snack.

Here is a recipe for homemade pomegranate molasses:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of pomegranate juice
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the pomegranate juice, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir well to combine.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened and reduced by about half. Be sure to keep an eye on the mixture and stir it often to prevent burning.
  4. Once the mixture has thickened and reduced, remove the pan from the heat and let it cool to room temperature.
  5. Once the mixture has cooled, strain it through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean jar or bottle.
  6. Store the pomegranate molasses in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
